Your guide to polythene!

Polythene Sheeting is an all-round hero product for both professionals and DIYers, which is why it’s a product we highly recommend all merchants should stock.

The versatility of our waterproof, high-quality polythene sheeting means it can be used to provide surface protection and dust screening during building, decoration, house removals and more.

Proguard polythene comes either multi-folded or centre-folded making it easy to transport and is available is a wide variety of sizes and thicknesses. To help you understand the difference between each option, we’ve outlined what each product is best suited for.

Light duty polythene (under 200 gauge)

Light duty polythene is a great alternative to the traditional dust sheet. Best suited for single uses, it provides extremely cost-effective protection which is easy to install then can be quickly disposed of after use. Proguard’s lightweight, flexible polythene can be draped over furniture during DIY and redecoration or placed on floors to protect carpets from dust, debris and paint splashes.

Medium duty polythene (200-500 gauge)

Our medium duty polythene can be used for all the tasks outlined for light duty but with the added benefit of being slightly more robust. Therefore, it is particularly useful for the protection of furniture during house removals or storage.

However, the main highlight to this higher gauge polythene is when it is used with temporary screening props to create a dust screen. The extra weight in this polythene means it hangs especially well with props. Proguard also stock a 300 gauge fire retardant polythene (flame retardant to LPS1207, certificate number 521/a) which will provide protection against fire hazards.
We would highly recommend resellers ask their customers if the project they are working on requires flame retardant protection.

Heavy duty polythene (500-1000 gauge)

A heavier duty polythene is suitable for both indoor and outdoor long-term use. Whether it be lining a pond, covering outdoor furniture or as a protective layer to an outhouse roof, the uses are virtually endless.

It provides excellent protection on floors where there may be heavier foot traffic. It can also be used for general DIY and redecoration projects, especially to cover furniture or goods which require a higher level of protection. If undamaged, it is suitable for reusing again.

Extra heavy-duty polythene (1000+ gauge)

This is some serious kit! A polythene of this gauge or above is often referred to as builders’ polythene or damp-proof membrane. At this thickness, it can be used as a moisture barrier in the concrete foundations of a building. The Proguard range benefits from being BBA approved. Resellers may find the centre-fold option is especially useful for customers who are concreting as it covers large areas quickly.

It can also be used for temporary roof covering, protecting newly-laid floors, cement mixing, and other protection applications.
